Approximately 60 percent of respondents strongly agreed, and one-third somewhat agreed, that academic freedom in higher education has diminished. Faculty are specifically hesitant to discuss politics and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to Inside Higher Ed.

Over 40 percent of the 1,100 respondents “said their sense of academic freedom in teaching declined over the last year” while “more than 20 percent said the same about academic freedom in research,” the outlet reported.

Regarding “extramural” speech, such as speech on social media, about 50 percent of respondents said they “somewhat or strongly agreed” that they censor themselves “due to the situation on their own campus and/or the broader political environment.”

Further, about a third of faculty reported they are no longer discussing certain topics with students that they may have in the past. Similarly, 15 percent are “not researching or publishing on topics they otherwise would have.” […]

Trump Win Could Prompt More Group Hugs, Cry-Ins, Safe Spaces for Students to Cope https://redwave.press/trump-win-could-prompt-more-group-hugs-cry-ins-safe-spaces-for-students-to-cope/ https://redwave.press/trump-win-could-prompt-more-group-hugs-cry-ins-safe-spaces-for-students-to-cope/#respond Mon, 04 Nov 2024 09:21:29 +0000 https://redwave.press/trump-win-could-prompt-more-group-hugs-cry-ins-safe-spaces-for-students-to-cope/ I’ll admit it: Probably the main reason I want Donald Trump to win another term as president on Tuesday is so I can watch progressives melt down like they did in 2016.

Nothing would be more fitting for what they subjected the man to over the last eight years.

Liberal meltdown was bad enough eight years ago, but that was due to Trump being a big underdog who eeked out the win in the waning 48 hours. They were in shock.

The University of Pennsylvania created a “breathing space” for students troubled by the Trump win, complete with coloring books and craft-making, along with a puppy and some cats to cuddle.

Students at Cornell University held a “cry-in” regarding the outcome, with one student saying she was “quite terrified, honestly.” […]

Economist Group Has 45 DEI Panels, Refuses One on Hayek https://redwave.press/economist-group-has-45-dei-panels-refuses-one-on-hayek/ https://redwave.press/economist-group-has-45-dei-panels-refuses-one-on-hayek/#respond Thu, 19 Sep 2024 08:29:04 +0000 https://redwave.press/economist-group-has-45-dei-panels-refuses-one-on-hayek/ The American Economic Association found space for at least 45 panels on DEI at its upcoming conference – but had no room for a discussion about economist Friedrich Hayek.

Chapman University Professor Mark Skousen revealed how he wanted to organize a discussion about Hayek, a Nobel Prize-winning libertarian economist famous for his book “The Road to Serfdom,” and other writings.

“Earlier this year, economist Tawni Hunt Ferrarini and I proposed a session for the January meeting honoring the free-market Austrian Friedrich Hayek on the 50th anniversary of his winning the Nobel Prize,” Skousen wrote on Monday in the Wall Street Journal.

But Harvard University Professor Lawrence Katz said he was “unable to include this session in the program,” according to Skousen. Katz is the incoming president of the economist group (which is run by Democrats).

“It should also be noted that the American Economic Association’s organizing committee greenlit some 45 sessions devoted to topics of diversity, equity, inclusion, inequality, gender, belonging, segregation, sexual harassment, discrimination, race and LBGT,” Skousen wrote. […]

Hundreds of college courses around the country indoctrinate students with leftist ideology, according to a report recently published by Young America’s Foundation.

YAF’s 29th annual “Comedy and Tragedy Report” provides descriptions of more than 250 courses offered at over 50 universities nationwide “to document the intellectual bias and shameless indoctrination taking place through slanted curriculum at America’s so-called prestigious institutions of higher education.”

Some of the courses in the 53-page report include “Queer Nightlife” and “Music and Socialism” at Brown University, “Race, Climate Change, and Environmental Justice” at Columbia University, “Dangerous Intersections: Intersectionality Beyond Boundaries” at Dartmouth College, and “Queer Nation: LGBTQ Protest, Politics, and Policy in the United States” at Harvard University.

The description of the “Queer Nightlife” course states students will “explore the spaces, the dancing, the outfits, the laws and legal gray areas, the drag, the cruising, and the rumbling bass, textures, and frequencies of queer nightlife.” […]
